Saturday in Design, Melbourne

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Melbourne showrooms such as Cult, Space, and Jardan amongst others, bravely opened their doors and had espresso machines working overtime to welcome the swarm of design aficionados into their 'homes' at this years Saturday in Design event. In true Australian style the two-day annual trade event for the design community saw great design, fabulous food and copious amounts of wine - and coffee! Take a look at our top picks.

Great Dane
Tucked behind roller doors, the Great Dane team transformed an ordinary loading bay into a modern day Whisky Den to kick off the party on Friday night. Taking inspiration from the raw elements of design and materiality in the new collections by Benjamin Hubert for De La Espada the showroom also saw the launch of the new Muuto store-within-a-store concept Raw: New Nordic. We loved the Cargo Dining Chair by Benjamin Hubert for De La Espada and the Stacked Shelf System by JDS Architects for Muuto.

Cult
Cult divided their sprawling showroom into four levels, with Eat on the ground floor, Live on the second, Work on the third level and Sleep on the newly opened fourth floor. A complete fit out of a loft style, raw brick walled 'apartment' was created on the Sleep floor with views of the city outskirts teasing us with what it would be like to have your whole space kit out with Cult furniture. Needless to say we didn't want to go home. Highlights on show were the recent re release by Gubi of Adnet's collaboration with Hermes and the leather covered Adnet Mirror and Gubi's eponymous Grasshopper light by Greta M Grossman. Design with history was very much the flavour of the day.

Jardan
Collaborating with the clever crew from Safari Living  to create styled 'rooms' Jardan created a pop up show room at Rokeby Studios, encouraging everyone to mooch inside and mingle amongst their new designs. It had us scheming the introduction of new pieces to our existing Jardan clad homes. We have our eye on the Wilfred sofa.

Ross Gardam
The simplicity and elegance of Ross Gardam'Oak pendant light in solid FSC timber caught our eye instantly. Each light shade is hand crafted and defined by the grain of the oak selected and the intersecting hole allows for a range of hanging options.  Available in one size, and three finishes of Natural, Black and Lime in Australian made ECO Timber.
